The Swan Maiden
Couronnes de Toussaint
Continuing the tradition of Valentine's Day and Halloween releases, there will be TWO stand-alone scents released: "Handsome Devil" and "La Belle Dame sans Merci".
With "The Swan Maiden" and "Siegfried" set for release this week, here is
a BIG announcement of upcoming releases through Valentine’s Day 2019.
Halloween is always a release day for Ikiryō and this one will be the biggest yet.
I am very excited to announce the release of TWO fragrances from the Sleepwalker series: “Ad Noctum” and the eponymous “Ikiryō”. The scent of “Ad Noctum” is like an amber/vanilla passing away and coming back to life as a vampire. “Ikiryō” (nicknamed “Vanilla Rum Rum Gimme Some”) is a boozy vanilla with a resinous bedsheet. Both will have the Ikiryō signature DNA.
There will be a “These Three” release that will contain a flanker. “These Hallowed Three” will be inspired by Days of the Dead from around the world, one of which played a big influence in the evolution of Halloween. The scents will be: “Catrina” (Dia de los Muertos, Mexico) is marigold and tamarind heavy, “Couronnes de Toussaints” (La Toussaint, France) is a beautiful solemn chrysanthemum (“couronnes de toussaints” which means "crowns of saints" refers to wreaths in the shape of crowns that are left at burial sites of loved ones. These wreaths are often dominated by chrysanthemums) and Fête Ghede (pronounce “fat ge-day”, of the same name, Voodoo, Haiti) is tobaccoy, boozy and spicy, inspired by voodoo loa Baron Samedi and his wife, the beautiful Maman Brigette. The flanker is called “Hill of Tara” (Samhain, Ireland) and is named after the site where the festival of Samhain marking the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter is celebrated. This will therefore be the last release of the Halloween releases. The fragrance itself is very green and fresh, but cold.
The new year will see the release of the final chapter in the Lucidite storyline from the sleepwalker series, “Addendum”. There will also be the next Profiles fragrance released, “Heka(te)”. “Heka” was part of a contest in which I sent a sample of the fragrance out to five winners of a the first portion of the contest and asked them to suggest a title. Tami won a close three way race with the title “Heka” (an ancient Egyptian deification of magick and medicine). To call attention to the unisex designation, I have added the "te" to incorporate the female counterpart of Heka, Hekate.
Lastly, as with Halloween, Valentine’s Day is also a definite release day. It will see the release of a 9 part unisex (for the most part) gourmand-floral series, some of which will incorporate the “Sleepwalker” template. However instead of one book per release, there will be one book incorporating all the fragrances. The two scents released on this day will be “Tree of Sorrow” (referring to the tree that night blooming jasmine grows on) is jasmine and woody notes and the long awaited “La Vie Secrete des Anges”, a scent I have had created for two years but have been waiting for the right time to release. It is orchids, chocolate malt, candied orange slices and davana among other things…:-J
Two of my friends were married on July 18th, 2016. Soon it will be their second anniversary. July 18th will also see the release of “The Swan Maiden”…a fragrance intended to be an artistic interpretation of a bridal scent. There will also be a masculine released, tentatively titled “Siegfried”. These scents will be stand-alone releases and not part of any of the series’ that I have. The notes of “The Swan Maiden” are: Forget-me-not, honey, lotus, stephanotis, white rose, moss, ambergris, ambroxan, vetiver, castoreum, cocoa, aquatic notes and ozonic notes.
Anyone who knows anything about swans knows that when the bond, they bond for life. And the story I have written for the accompanying book is loosely based on the fable of the Swan Maiden, who ultimately bonds with a mortal named Siegfried. And it is this “bonding” which was the obvious reason I chose to associate it with the bonding of man and woman when they are wed.
The model for this piece was Anoush Anou, whom I had photographed once before, 5 years ago. She deserves major points for braving the cold elements and chilly waters on an early morning jaunt to the beach on Alameda.
"Eidolon" is no available.
The dark rose is upon us. "Profiles #3: Anne Boleyn" is now available.
Also, the fragrances in the "These Sinful Three" package are available separately, but upon request.
The dark rose cometh, 19th of May...
It is Valentine's Day..."Othello", "Desdemona" and "Miscegenation" are now available...
Valentine's Day is coming...and so is "Othello"...
On this date 50 years ago, October 6th, 1967, exactly one year after the love pageant rally, a group of true hippies staged an event in San Francisco that was called “Death of the Hippie”.
Rather than psychedelics, drug dealers who had no interest in the social activism aspect of the hippie movement began infiltrating the town with hard drugs which began to create paranoia and lack of care or concern from those indulging in themselves. People were becoming more and more rundown and the massive issue with runaways became even more of a problem now that impressionable and unlearned youth were moving on to hard drugs. A man who was involved in the hippie movement once said “it was fun at first going to the Diggers (a free service for hippies offering free food and clothing) for free soup at the beginning of the summer. Sitting with a community of new fresh faces was enjoyable. But when I went back at the end of the summer, those people in line REALLY needed it…and the scene became squalid. The Utopian moment had come and gone.”
This group of true hippies had decided “enough was enough”, and staged a “mock funeral” and called it “The Death of the Hippie”. This was their way of acknowledging that the movement had gotten WAY out of hand with people coming to town from all over the country as well as from other countries and (in most cases) taking advantage of the city’s resources. They said to anyone with designs on coming to San Francisco “if you truly believe in this movement, stay where you are. It will grow wings and spread if you did so rather than having it centered in one town.”
Today I am releasing the later half of my “These Psychedelic Three” collection called “These Psychedelic Three, Omega” (“These Psychedelic Three, Alpha” was released in June). Three scents make up this release. “Strawberry Love Pop” was the first created. “Hope” is the culmination of both of these releases. It explains the reason behind the packaging resembling a beaten up Pandora’s box. In mythology, when you open a Pandora’s box and release all of the ills into the world, the only thing left in the box is “hope”.
Finally there is “Ghostdance”. This scent was created to not only commemorate the event of October 6th, 1967 but to call attention to one of the inspirations behind the hippie movement: the Native American, living in a money-free, self sustaining community. Hence why my photoshoot was made to depict someone in wears inspired by the Native American…and in black…
“These Psychedelic Three, Omega” launches October 6th. On this day in 1967 and event called “Death of the Hippie was staged. This event, staged by (genuine) hippies in San Francisco was to acknowledge the fact that the hippie movement had gotten WAY out of hand and to bring it to an end. Many people from out town and even out of the country had infiltrated San Francisco to take advantage of the city and its resources as well as the hippie movement and ITS “resources”. This release commemorates that. The fragrances include “Strawberry Love Pop”, a heady strawberry incense, “Ghostdance”, an homage to the aforementioned “Death of the Hippie” event as well as an acknowledgement of one of the key inspirations of the hippie movement: the Native American. As mentioned before, the packaging is a “beaten and worn” pandora’s box (to indicate a struggle or battle for one’s beliefs and wearing those battle scars). The myth of the pandora’s box is when one open’s the box, it releases all ills and evils into the world…and there is nothing left in the box except “hope”. The final fragrance is the two “These Psychedelic Three” release is therefore called “Hope”…
On the heels of “These Psychedelic Three” is a return to “When a Sleepwalker Dreams”. Halloween 2017 heralds the releases of the much anticipated sequel to “Lucidité”. Whereas "Lucidité" was a cherry incense, "Pavor Nocturnus" is a deep, dark cherry oud and cherry blossom...
"White Rabbit" along with "These Psychedelic Three, Alpha" has been reviewed by the fabulous Lola at LolaScents. Watch the review HERE...
Now available, the first ever Ikiryo flanker. "Pearl" is an ode to legendary singer and first lady of rock Janis Joplin ("Pearl" was her nickname). The fragrance features daphne, rose, patchouli and musk.
The boxes on all "These Psychedelic Three, Alpha" releases are wooden boxes made to look like beaten up pandora's boxes...which will be explained with the announcement of the second half of this series "These Psychedelic Three, Omega"...stay tuned...
"Sugaring" is now available for purchase.
Up next will be the next "These Three" release. A salute to the Summer of '67, "These Psychedelic Three, Alpha" was inspired in part by choreographer Trey McIntyre's "Be Here Now", choreographed for and staged by Smuin Ballet in San Francisco. "White Rabbit" opens as a white floral, but soon drops down the hole into the land of gourmands. "Damn Hippie" mixes cliched notes of the hippie movement such as patchouli and frankincense with a heavy dose of amber and woods. And lastly "Orange Sunshine", a psychedelic orange and amber scent. Release is June 13th.
The next scent to be released will be called "Sugaring" and will be released on the birthday of Vincent of Dreamhouse: May 4th.
The floral duo mentioned in March has now become a floral trio. A unisex scent, "Tree of Sorrow" is the third scent. Release is still TBD.
It is an honor to mention that the first article on Ikiryo has just been written an posted on Fragrantica by Dr. Marlen Harrison. You can read it here.
The "Cœurs Sombres" trio will be available this coming week.
Ikiryo is proud to announce the development of a floral duo "Je Peux Rêver", a beautiful night blooming jasmine scent originally created for ballet dancer and friend Terez Dean. The second may have the longest title in existence for a fragrance: "Thoughts of Whom I Wish to Pass the Night With". Gardenia is a scent traditionally feminine. However for months I have been developing a scent that both women AND men can wear. The scent will include gardenia, blackberry, vanilla and musks. It was inspired (as was "Incubus") by a section in a libretto to a proposed ballet I once wrote.
The release of the "Cœurs Sombres" trio is delayed for one month. Samples, however ARE available.
Also, two new fragrances have been announces. "Sugaring", a brandied peach scent and "Je Peux Rêver", a jasmine based scent, will both be released on April 1st.
Just announced: the release of a limited edition 3 scent set (until further notice). The set, titled "These Sinful Three", features three fragrances, 10ml in size, in rollerball bottles. Each scent features notes that speak of decadence and sin. The fragrances are "Blood Cherry Cordial", "Vanilla Opi-oud" and "AppleRum and Jasmine". All three scents are represented by historical figures Elizabeth Bathory, Lucrezia Borgia and Anita Berber, figures known for their "sin" and "excess" (wrongfully, in two of the three cases). Each set includes the 3 bottles and sells for $80.00. Release date is scheduled for January 17th.
There will also be a special limited edition package that will include a book containing biographies on all three figures.
Valentine's Day will bring in Ikiryo's Valentine's Day "Cœurs Sombres" Trilogy. with the release of "Incubus", "Succubus" and "Magie Sexualle", masculine, feminine and unisex scents respectively.
Also slated for 2017 release is the start of the "Ambre Ange" series which will feature Vincent of Dreamhouse himself prominently. And finally the massive three part epic "Crestfallen" which will include up to six fragrances...!
All of this plus various spot releases.
Indeed a busy and exciting 2017 for Ikiryo... :-D
Ikiryo is very proud to announce the release of TWO fragrances/books this Halloween. Ikiryo is always striving to create paradoxical releases. "Mesmerism" is a musty fresh scent. A scent that smells like a fresh scent that has been locked away in an attic with a mysterious presence. The book itself involves the ghost of a ventriloquist and her dummy...in an attic.
The epic "Fugue" features a scent that tranforms distinguishable fruit notes to drunken ones....and back again. The book, inspired by the Jekyll/Hyde tale, involves a chemist creating a fragrance as a base for an incense...but the fumes send him into a "fugue state". There will be a limited edition package of both books available as well.
In celebration of Ikiryo's perfumer spotlight profile in Facebook Fragrance Friends during 7/29-31, Ikiryo is proud to announce the release of "Sad Cypress" in conjunction with the profile...
