Nocturine

She entered the water sometime during the night, though she could no longer remember when. Around her, chrysanthemums drifted across the black surface, their pale petals moving so slowly they seemed suspended rather than floating. She carried with her a single nectarine, yet once she hit the waters, it became its own being, though it followed the gentle current she created beside her, carrying the faint sweetness of autumn into the cold night air. Above, the stars were disappearing one by one. She watched them without sadness, breathing in a distant trace of incense that seemed to come from somewhere beyond the fog, although there was no shore, no temple, no fire that she could see.

Far beyond her, something had begun to change. Beneath the fog at the edge of the world, the darkness was becoming amber—not yet dawn, but the promise of it. She remained perfectly still, surrounded by chrysanthemum and night, wondering how long she could remain there before morning found her soaking in the sweetened salty waters created by the nectarine. For these last few moments, she belonged neither to darkness nor daylight, but to the strange and beautiful interval between them: the hour when night knows it is ending, but has not yet disappeared.
